So I’ve sat here now - for literal hours thinking of many different ways on how to start this. “This” - being my personal newsletter, my blog. I refused to start with the typical canned start of “Hi! I’m Brya and welcome to my Substack!” Because that never feels authentic. So, how could I give an proper introduction on me and who I am? Well - I suppose that starts with the first question: Who are you? And to that I say, shit, I’m still figuring it out. I could give different aspect of who I am, like my age, gender, race, etc etc yada yada. But this isn’t a job or welfare application (I’ll get into my thoughts on the welfare system later) this my platform.
A platform I started because I have something to say, I actually have a lot of something’s to say, and well you’re here because you’re interested in my something’s to say. So let’s start here - shall we? I’m Brya (Bre - Uh) and I am first and foremost a creative. Now hold on! Before you roll your eyes and suck your teeth at me claiming the title that is mine, I want you to look internally and think about it for one second. Creative. We are all creatives in our own right. I use my creativity to write, and inspire, to love and to console. Others use their creativity to rear children, take care of the sick, even lead movements. See that? Here you are in good company, take a seat and let me introduce myself! So lets try this again?
Hey Suge - I’m Brya, but since we’re friends, you can call me Bry. My resume says that I am a marketer and creative by profession, I have some years in marketing various products for various tech company’s. I am a PROUD HBCU (Historically Black College and University) graduate. I’m from the Deep South of Louisiana, what the people around that way would say “Up da baya1”, a small town that, for the longest only had one red light. I’m proud of where I come from; I couldn’t always say that.
MELK Haus was named after the generations of women before me, (M)asin (E)lizabeth (L)avolia (K)a’Shonda. My great great grandmother, grandmother, great grandmother and mother. Once you’re at MELK haus, baby you at home! Without them - I would not be here, and I am eternally and forever grateful to them PERIODT. I have a mini schnauzer named Saint and a fish named Midnight, I also have a squishmellow named Bun ( I tend to name a lot of things important to me, rather alive or not, some say its an ADHD thing). On this journey, we’ll learn a lot about each other, and I’m stoked to get to know you!
I know the why, why I started my platform, because yes I have something’s to say, but there are other’s like me in the world, who are looking for something familiar, and well sha 2 you found it! MELK haus is my house, the familiar place you’ve been looking for, and I’m sharing it with you. Welcome home suge, take ya shoes off and get cozy. We have a lot to get into and I am so excited at the possibilities to come. Remember to subscribe, so that I can come directly to your inbox. We’ll chat about love, hope, shadow work, folklores , endless fun and learning. I love you - have a lovely day, and I’ll see you next time!
