Okay so I know what you’re thinking, “Brya is about to go on another Wash your ass rant” and you’re not wrong - but you’re not right either. Two things can be true at once, suge. Do you remember when we found out that bathing wasn’t common with some white people? Girl got on Beyoncé’s internet and whole heartedly claimed they do not bathe. Either that or they “wash” the upper half of their body and let the soap wash down drain hopping the suds will at least touch a toe. Now hygiene is obviously importantly. All the old people I know, some have passed and some are still around; would say “Cleanliness is next to godliness” and shit, who wouldn’t want to be close to God?
Me personally - I grew up in the bath tub. My momma would bathe baby me in the kitchen sink, Soon after when I got a lil older and more independent I would bathe myself in the bath tub; dunking rubber ducks and bald headed Barbie’s in and out of the bubbles from the temporary bubbles from the watered down bubble bath. As I got older I, like a lot of my fellow millennials leaned on just showering. Nowadays, I find myself in a full circle moment, being that I regularly use my bathtub more than the shower, no Barbie’s included. I use the bath for many things: a tool of unwinding, stress relief, a thinking place, a hiding place, a place to dream, a place to cry, a place to forget, a place to recenter, to recharge….and to replenish, my favorite place. You see darling, the bath tub for me symbolizes more than just a place where you clean your physical body. It is a place where one would pick themselves up and put the pieces back together.
When was the last time you had a moment to yourself? To melt into a shallow pool of comfortable water and you were present in the moment? It’s free therapy, and you could use some. Now, the bath cannot solve everything and if you’re suffering mentally then go ahead and book that session suge. I could definitely go on and on and on about the wellbeing benefits of daily soaks, but what I really want to chat about is your, mine and our spiritual hygiene.I’m not here to berate you our convince you to join or practice some random new age spirituality - ness. Hey, if that’s what you wanna do then by all means do you boo! The real tea is that regardless of what type of religion or spiritual journey you follow we all have to be aware of our spiritual hygiene. For some that might sound like an extremely foreign concept but for others, it is as important as wiping after using the bathroom. Hygiene is important because it helps prevent the spread of bacteria and germs. To have good hygiene would mean, washing your hands frequently, brushing your teeth and bathing regularly. What I want you to do is apply this to your spiritual practices. Healthy spiritual hygienic practices are so important I created an entire business dedicated to it (iykyk). In life - we come across a lot of different energies, experiences and even people. Regardless of our intentions, wants or desires we will be impacted by them. What do you do to make sure you don’t take home some grimy energy
My great grandmother used to have this saying, when she would come across someone who clearly lived a hard life - and wore it on their shoulders - she’d say that person looked road hard and hung up wet. Is that what you want to look like suge? Of course you don’t! When you come across a situation that’s makes you uncomfortable, queasy or just downright suspicious? That’s your spirt begging you to turn around. Listen to it Chile, because it only wants to protect you from the spiritual gremlins in the world.
So before I let you go here’s something to remember: your spiritual hygiene is as important as mental and physical, take care of yourself. I love you and I’ll see you next time.
